What happens when teens are given a real seat at the table; not just to observe, but to contribute? In Gesher, we’re watching that answer unfold every day.
Marshall Civin and Ruby Levinson are two standout participants who are stepping into leadership across Baltimore’s Jewish community. While they serve on different boards and come with different motivations, their journeys reveal a shared story: when teens are trusted with responsibility, they rise to it in powerful ways.
Marshall’s path to Gesher began in a familiar place, his synagogue. Through his confirmation class at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, he found himself drawn into thoughtful conversations with his rabbis about the role of dialogue, questioning, and critical thinking in Jewish life. Those conversations didn’t just stay theoretical. Recognizing his voice and perspective, his synagogue selected him to represent them on a board, an opportunity that opened the door to deeper leadership through Gesher.

Ruby’s story starts from a different place but arrives at a similar destination. Motivated by a desire to be more connected and involved, she saw Gesher as a chance to move from participant to contributor. What began as a step outside her comfort zone quickly became something more meaningful: an opportunity to help shape experiences that bring people together.

Both Marshall and Ruby quickly discovered that leadership isn’t just about having a seat at the table, it’s about learning how to use your voice once you’re there.
For Marshall, being one of the only teens in a room of experienced adults was initially daunting. Over time, though, it became a training ground. He’s learned how to listen carefully, choose his moments thoughtfully, and speak in ways that add real value to complex conversations. That growth became tangible when he shared ideas about increasing engagement through social media, ideas that were not only heard, but taken seriously by leadership.
Ruby’s growth has taken a complementary path. Where she once hesitated, she now steps forward. Her experience has strengthened her confidence in sharing ideas and collaborating with others. She’s come to see that strong leadership isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about listening well, working together, and showing up with intention. One of her most meaningful moments has been seeing the real impact of her work through the Macks Jewish Connection Network, where fostering connection and belonging isn’t just a goal, it’s something she actively helps create.
Along the way, both teens have developed skills that extend far beyond the boardroom. Marshall has gained insight into how organizations think and operate, from high-level discussions to the financial and strategic decisions that shape community institutions. Ruby has sharpened her communication, teamwork, and time management skills, learning how to balance responsibility while staying creative and engaged.
And perhaps most importantly, both are beginning to see themselves as leaders, not just now, but into the future.
Marshall is already thinking about continuing his involvement in nonprofit leadership, using what he’s learned to support causes that matter to him. Ruby carries forward a growing confidence that will serve her in any path she chooses, grounded in the knowledge that her voice has impact.
Their stories reflect something essential about Gesher: this isn’t just a program about leadership; it’s a bridge into it. A space where teens don’t just prepare for the future but actively shape the present.
Marshall and Ruby are already making a difference. And they’re just getting started.

Gesher is often the next step for teens who have already begun their leadership journey through 4Front’s Signature Programs, where they build the confidence and skills that make this kind of impact possible.
